Have a squeeky belt that you'd rather not scream loudly when you start your car? No problem, we'll likely have you in and out in little time. Often belts and hoses are a quick fix and better yet - inexpensive!

Belts and hoses are critical because serpentine belts are most often used to turn the water pump, alternator, power steering and air-conditioning compressor. When a belt snaps, all is lost leaving you likely stranded on the road.

Belts and Hoses

mission critical to the function of an automobile

Belts and hoses will wear over time as they are combating heat, cold, chemicals and vibration each and every time you drive your vehicle. These conditions, over time, always result in belt and hose deterioration in the form of cracking, peeling, leaking, condensation and general wear and tear.

What purpose do belts perform on my engine?

Belts play a significant and critical role in your vehicle’s daily operation. The radiator cooling fan belt, water pump belt, power steering belt, alternator belt, air conditioning compressor belt and of course the serpentine belt are each fundamental to your daily driving experience.

The radiator cooling fan belt and water pump belt play the role of keeping your engine at proper temperatures to prevent things like overheating. The power steering belt ensures you are able to maneuver your vehicle more easily while the alternator belt keeps a continuous charge to your engine and it’s peripheral systems. Today, most of the newer vehicles are using one or two belts as opposed to all the peripheral belts. In these cases, the serpentine belt is often responsible for powering your alternator, power steering pump and air conditioning system. Often the serpentine belt also powers the water pump, radiator fan and even power brake systems. A timing belt keeps the crankshaft and camshaft mechanically synchronized to maintain engine timing. V-belt is another name for a serpentine belt.

How often should I get my belts inspected?

The variety of vehicles and changing technology over the years makes this a difficult question to answer without knowing the year, make and model of your automobile. Your vehicle’s owner’s manual will provide the best answer to this question. It is advisable for you to have the belts inspected during routine maintenance visits.

What purpose do hoses perform on my engine?

Hoses serve the purpose of conduits, providing fluids throughout the engine and its peripheral parts, they are like arteries for your vehicle carrying fluid and air to various engine systems. They are made of rubber layers with fabric between them and sometimes they are made of silicone. As miles and time surpass, OEM or stock hoses will wear and break down.

  • Radiator hose or coolant hose provides coolant to the engine to keep a consistent engine temperature
  • Fuel hose directs fuel from the fuel tank to the engine
  • Vacuum hoses for emission and fuel control
  • Transmission hose provides transmission fluid to the transmission
  • Brake hoses supply the wheels the braking fluid
  • Turbo hoses provide boost and power
  • Windshield wiper fluid hoses perform delivery of wiper fluid to the wipers

How often should I get my hoses inspected?

Just as the case with your vehicle belts, it is always good practice to check your owner’s manual to determine the manufacturers recommendations regarding hoses. We recommend you get your hoses inspected at the same time you get routine maintenance to stay ahead of any potential issues. After all, a coolant / radiator hose malfunction can result in engine overheating which can leave you stranded.
